I have a new obsession . . . It’s really an old one with a new techno twist: Scrabble. It is hard to find the time to play a full, regular game of Scrabble nowadays, and even if one has the time, he or she must find another person with the time to play as well. But now, I can play 2, 3, 5 or 10 Scrabble games at the same time, and they can go on for days since each player only plays a move when he or she can.
I am talking, if course, about the Scrabulous application on Facebook. I am in total agreement with Chanpory of the blog LifeClever (see link below), who writes:
I have a confession. The reason why you’ve heard barely a peep from me isn’t because I’ve been Tasered by zealous cops or abducted by aliens. Truth is, I’ve been fiendishly playing
ScrabbleScrabulous on Facebook. I swear, It’s like a Krispy Kreme donut with sprinkles of crack on top.
Chanpory goes on to tell us how popular this little game has become. On weekdays, the Facebook version of Scrabulous gets 260,000 players . . . about 5 million hits a day. I am currently only playing five people (although Stacy - you know who you are, only plays about one move a week). My record is just a little over .500, but I have played a few mean games, like the one pictured below, that I played with my friend Jon from my alma mater Eastern Kentucky University. He almost always wins, but not in this game, not when I had two “bingos,” with one of them being worth 149 points (the word “BAREGiNE”). I must add that Jon plays a version of Scrabulous called Ultra-Mega-Power-Scrab, which not only encourages cheating, but demands it (there are lots of Scrabble Helps out there on the WWW). For more other opponents, however, I play the more conventional, non-cheating versions of the game.
So how ’bout it? Anyone want to play? As Chanpory did in his recent post, if anyone who reads this is on Facebook and would like to play a conventional Scrabulous game or the Ultra-Mega-Power Scrab version, just contact me at Facebook. Here is my profile link.
Thanks to Chanpory and his post “Scrabulous is fabulous on Facebook,” posted on Tuesday, 02 October 2007.
