It’s that time of the year. Time for the annual year-end lists. I have already posted my favorite blog entries here, and now it’s time to talk TV. Readers who can count will note that there are actually eleven shows in my top ten list. Oh well, that’s my prerogative as the owner of this here blog. Deal with it. The shows below are a diverse bunch, but one thing they all share is their ability to make we want to watch them every week if at all possible. I also mention a few near-misses at the end of the post. What are your favorite, don’t want to miss, TV series?
My 10 BEST:
1) “Battlestar Galactica” SciFi - Consistently the best show on TV, period. This darker version of the campy earlier Battlestar Galactica has it all: great acting, superb storytelling, and a contemporary feeling despite it’s science fiction setting.
2) “Dexter” Showtime - A serial killer who kills serial killers (talk about vigilante justice), and who also works as a blood-splatter analyst in the Miami police department. Michael C. Hall as Dexter and Julia Benz (of Buffy and Angel fame) shine.
3) “Pushing Daisies” ABC - This season’s Northern Exposure. A quirky and delightful show filled with memorable characters. Network television doesn’t get any better than this.
4) Tie “30 Rock,” NBC - Tina Fey is great, but Alec Baldwin is even better in this satire of network television.
4) Tie “The Office” - This show is almost always entertaining and without fail makes me laugh week in and week out.
5) “Lost,” ABC - The more answers we get, the more questions surface. The fact that the show keeps me coming back is a testament to it’s power.
6) “Heroes,” NBC - The ending of last season’s arc aside, I love this comic book of a show, and now that it has Kristen Bell (aka Veronica Mars), I like it even more.
7) “Saving Grace” TNT - Two words: Holly Hunter. Nuf said.
“Boston Legal,” ABC - Though for some William Shatner will always be Captain Kirk, the role of Denny Crane is the one Shatner was born to play.
9) “Flight of the Conchords,” HBO - Another quirky show (and I do love me my quirky shows), featuring the band from New Zealand and their hilarious lyrics and deadpan delivery.
10) “Rescue Me,” FX - Denis Leary’s character Tommy Gavin is one messed up dude, and I can’t wait to see the trouble he gets himself into each week.
Near Misses:
“The Sopranos” - I, for one, loved the way this series ended with the abrupt cut to a black screen that got millions of viewers out of their seats to check whether or not their TVs or cable boxes were still working. Ambiguity . . . I am big on it.
“How I Met Your Mother” - Neil Patrick Harris has finally overcome his Doogie Howser image. In fact, he rocks in this sit-com.
“House” - Hugh Laurie rules as the irascible M.D.
“Bones” - Kudos to David Boreanaz for his third successful series (after Buffy and Angel, of course).

The only tv shows I’ve only heard of out of those are “Lost,” “Heroes,” and “Saving Grace.”
